Crown Coverage Q&A

What is crown coverage?

Crown coverage is a term for dental restorations. Dental restorations are custom-crafted prosthetics that repair damaged or decaying teeth.

The team at Downtown Dental bonds restorations on top of your natural tooth enamel, improving your tooth’s appearance as well as your biting and chewing abilities.

What are the types of crown coverage?

The team at Downtown Dental offers several types of crown coverage, including:

Dental crowns

A dental crown is a synthetic cap that your dentist bonds on top of a damaged or decaying tooth. After the crown is placed, it restores your tooth to its near original size and shape.

At Downtown Dental, the team offers tooth-colored crowns. Tooth-colored crowns blend in with your existing permanent teeth, ensuring the work looks natural.

Bridges

A dental bridge is a restoration that features an artificial tooth. The artificial tooth fills a gap in your smile, ensuring your surrounding teeth don’t move out of position. The team at Downtown Dental offers several types of dental bridges. After an oral exam and a series of X-rays, they can make recommendations that align with your needs.

Veneers

If you have pointy, smaller-than-average, or unusually shaped teeth, the team at Downtown Dental might recommend veneers. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain bonded to the front of your permanent teeth. They cover up minor imperfections and make your smile appear balanced and symmetrical.

What does crown coverage involve?

At Downtown Dental, crown coverage requires two visits about a week apart.

First crown coverage visit

At the first visit, your Downtown Dental provider conducts an oral exam, takes X-rays, and asks about your goals. Then, they use a digital scanner to take impressions of your mouth.

Your provider uses the results of the scans to determine the type of crown coverage that will most benefit you. After making a recommendation, they prepare your teeth to receive the restoration and send your impressions to a laboratory that manufactures your crown, bridge, or veneers.

Second crown coverage visit

When the dental lab finishes your crown, bridge, or veneers, you return to Downtown Dental. Your provider administers a local anesthetic to numb your mouth, lines up the restoration with your permanent teeth, and bonds it in place.

How long do dental restorations last?

The length of time that dental restorations last depends on several factors, including how often you visit the dentist and if you brush and floss regularly. Crowns, bridges, and veneers typically last 12-15* years, but it’s possible to extend their use by practicing good oral hygiene.
